Project overview

Dragados, as lead contractor under a design-and-build contract in partnership with London Underground, delivered a transformative upgrade aimed at boosting capacity by around 40 %. The works included construction of a new Cannon Street entrance and ticket hall with six escalators and step‑free access to the Northern line and DLR; a 570 m southbound Northern line tunnel plus an additional 1,330 m of SCL (sprayed concrete lining) tunnels; new passenger passageways including a 100 m link tunnel with two moving walkways; and installation of 12 escalators, two lifts, and structural modifications to integrate seamlessly with existing Central, Northern, and DLR lines.

To deliver this under a fully operational station in the historic core of the Square Mile, project employed top-down deep basement construction techniques—supported by a bespoke steel truss spanning four basement levels—to avoid plunge piles and manage ground movements near critical Grade I‑ and II‑listed buildings. Their civil execution also encompassed complex tunnelling beneath active Underground assets, intercepting building piles at multiple locations, and working within stringent urban constraints—all requiring tight coordination with designers (AECOM, Dr Sauer, Robert Bird), specialists, and TfL to ensure safe, disruption‑minimised delivery

Duties and Responsibilities

As a Section Engineer on the Cannon Street Ticket Hall within the Bank Station Capacity Upgrade project, I was responsible for the day-to-day engineering management of a highly complex and safety-critical construction package within a live transport environment. My role focused on supervising structural and civil works including deep excavation, concrete construction, steel works installation, and fit-out coordination. I worked closely with subcontractors, site supervisors, design teams, and TfL stakeholders to ensure delivery aligned with safety, quality, and programme expectations. I also played a key role in planning activities, managing temporary works, monitoring site progress, and ensuring compliance with engineering standards and regulatory requirements.

🔧 Site Engineering Management

  • Supervised civil and structural activities for the new ticket hall, including excavation, formwork, reinforcement, and concrete pours.

  • Ensured work was executed in line with approved drawings, specifications, and method statements.

🛠️ Quality Assurance & Control

  • Carried out inspection and test plans (ITPs), snagging, and quality control checks.

  • Ensured all works complied with BS/EN standards and project-specific tolerances.

⚠️ Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

  • Promoted a safety-first culture on site, conducting regular safety briefings and ensuring RAMS were followed.

  • Participated in risk assessments and managed site activities in line with CDM and LU standards.

🏗️ Temporary Works Coordination

  • Coordinated the design, installation, inspection, and removal of temporary works such as propping systems, formwork, and access platforms.

  • Liaised with Temporary Works Coordinators and Design Engineers for approvals and checks.

📅 Planning & Progress Monitoring

  • Assisted in sequencing works to align with the master programme, flagging risks and delays to senior engineers and planners.

  • Recorded daily progress and supported weekly reporting to project controls.

🤝 Stakeholder and Subcontractor Coordination

  • Liaised with subcontractors to ensure efficient resource allocation and task execution.

  • Interfaced with design consultants and TfL representatives to resolve on-site technical issues.

🧠 Technical Support & Problem Solving

  • Provided technical input to overcome construction challenges, especially in congested and heritage-sensitive zones.

  • Reviewed and raised RFIs (Requests for Information) where clarification or design amendments were required.

🗂️ Document Management

  • Maintained accurate records of drawings, redlines, as-builts, and construction documentation using project management platforms like eB or Aconex.
