Project overview
As part of the Crossrail West Enhanced Stations Phase 2 contract, Graham Group undertook the upgrade of Ealing Broadway station to meet the operational and accessibility requirements of the Elizabeth line. The scope included the demolition of existing station structures and the construction of a new, larger ticket hall with an integrated steel-framed canopy structure supported on piled foundations. Graham installed four new 16-person lifts to provide step-free access to all platforms, along with new precast concrete staircases, new platform canopies, and extensive platform extension works to accommodate the full length of Elizabeth line trains. The station remained operational throughout construction, requiring phased delivery and complex interface management with live railway environments.
The works also involved significant mechanical, electrical, and public health (MEP) installations, including new lighting systems, fire detection and alarm systems, CCTV, public address systems, and passenger information displays. New station communications rooms were constructed, alongside the installation of new drainage and utility connections. External works included a new forecourt layout and hard landscaping to integrate the station with the surrounding urban environment. All works were carried out under strict railway safety and possession constraints, with close coordination with Network Rail and Transport for London to minimise disruption to ongoing services.
Duties and responsibilities
As a Senior Engineer on the Ealing Broadway Crossrail upgrade, I managed the technical delivery of complex civil and structural works in a live rail environment. I coordinated critical activities like demolition, piling, steel erection, precast installation, and MEP integration, ensuring compliance with project specifications, Network Rail standards, and Crossrail requirements. I contributed to programme development, method statements, risk assessments, and safe work systems. My role included quality assurance and oversight across key work packages such as the station entrance, lift shafts, and platform upgrades. I liaised with temporary works coordinators, managed as-built records, and led engineering teams to deliver works on schedule. Close stakeholder coordination during possessions ensured integration of track, signalling, and electrical systems without service disruption. Through effective leadership, I helped deliver this major upgrade aligned with the Elizabeth line’s commissioning.
